Its Botanical name is Epiphyllum oxypetalum (Dutchman's pipe cactus or queen of the night) is a species of cactus and one of the most cultivated species in the genus. It blooms rarely and only at night, and its flowers wilt before dawn. Also known as " QUEEN OF THE NIGHT ".Nishagandhi is the name given because of the flower bloom only in the night. The flower looks like a cradle with the star and hence its name " BETHLEHEM LILY ". Its blooming stage complete by Midnight. Buds of the flower start to appear on the edges of the leafy stem. Propagation of Nishagandhi is by stem or leaf cuttings. In India, it is called Brahma Kamalam, named after the Hindu god of creation, Lord Brahma. This flower, named after Brahma, the God of Creation (as per Hindu mythology), blooms only for one night in the entire year, somewhere between mid-June and mid-October. The blooming lasts only for a few (10 ) hours. Brahmakamal is related to the story of how Brahma emerged from Vishnu’s navel in a lotus flower. Medicinal uses
The phyllodes contain some active ingredients and show antibacterial activity ( Upendra and Khandelwal,2012). The stem is also used medicinally to cure dropsy and cardiac affections. Vietnamese people use petals of the faded blooms to make soups which are supposed to have tonic and aphrodisiac medicinal properties.
Confusion about the Brahma Kamal flower
Some from the northern part of India claims that the flower of Saussurea obvallata of family Compositae to be Brmaha Kamal. Which is a very beautiful flower of valleys in Himalayan ranges?
